Grade scale converter

Convert your grade to the German 1.0–4.0 scale with the Modified Bavarian Formula — the same formula German institutions use. The result is an unofficial estimate; the binding conversion comes from uni-assist or your target university.

How this works

The Modified Bavarian Formula (KMK resolution of 15.03.1991, as amended 18.11.2004) is: x = 1 + 3 × (Nmax − Nd) / (Nmax − Nmin), where Nmax is the best possible grade, Nmin the lowest passing grade and Nd your grade.

The result is stated to one decimal place and never rounded — 2.25 becomes 2.2, not 2.3. That is what the KMK resolution requires.

On the German scale, 1.0–1.5 reads as sehr gut, 1.6–2.5 as gut, 2.6–3.5 as befriedigend and 3.6–4.0 as ausreichend (the minimum pass).
