The office tells you how to apply and the fee; some documents are issued the same day.

Why it's phrased this way

  • German formal correspondence uses the polite form "Sie" (always capitalised), never "du", for anyone you do not know personally — landlords, offices, doctors, employers. Verbs and pronouns follow the Sie form throughout the message. Source ↗
  • Open a formal message with "Sehr geehrte Frau [surname]," or "Sehr geehrter Herr [surname]," when you know the recipient's name, and "Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren," when you do not. The salutation ends with a comma, and the first word of the sentence that follows is written in lower case. Source ↗
  • Close a formal message with "Mit freundlichen Grüßen" followed by your name — the standard business sign-off. The closing line itself takes no comma or other punctuation. Source ↗

What this does and doesn't do

These are templates for everyday, no-consequence correspondence — you fill in your own details and send. It does not write cancellations, objections, or any letter with a legal deadline (a Kündigung or Widerspruch): those carry legal effect, so take them to the Verbraucherzentrale or the relevant office.
