Dear Sir or Madam, I moved into the flat at […] on […] and have to register with the residents' registration office within two weeks. For this I need your landlord's confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). As the housing provider you are required under Section 19 of the Federal Registration Act to confirm the move-in in writing. Wohnungsgeberbestätigung
nach § 19 Bundesmeldegesetz
- Name und Anschrift des Wohnungsgebers
- Name und Anschrift des Eigentümers (falls abweichend)
- Datum des Einzugs
- Anschrift der Wohnung
- Namen der meldepflichtigen Personen
- Ort, Datum — Unterschrift des Wohnungsgebers
Your landlord fills and signs it — send it with the email above. Print or save it as PDF to attach.
Why it's phrased this way
- Your landlord (Wohnungsgeber) is legally required to confirm your move-in in writing — the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung. Under §19 Bundesmeldegesetz they must provide it within the registration period, so it is fair to mention this obligation in your request. Source ↗
- You must register your address within two weeks of moving in (§17(1) Bundesmeldegesetz) — which is why you need the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung promptly. Source ↗
- German formal correspondence uses the polite form "Sie" (always capitalised), never "du", for anyone you do not know personally — landlords, offices, doctors, employers. Verbs and pronouns follow the Sie form throughout the message. Source ↗
- Close a formal message with "Mit freundlichen Grüßen" followed by your name — the standard business sign-off. The closing line itself takes no comma or other punctuation. Source ↗

What this does and doesn't do
These are templates for everyday, no-consequence correspondence — you fill in your own details and send. It does not write cancellations, objections, or any letter with a legal deadline (a Kündigung or Widerspruch): those carry legal effect, so take them to the Verbraucherzentrale or the relevant office.
