What happens next
If you are off longer than your employer allows without one, send a doctor's certificate (AU).
Why it's phrased this way
- German formal correspondence uses the polite form "Sie" (always capitalised), never "du", for anyone you do not know personally — landlords, offices, doctors, employers. Verbs and pronouns follow the Sie form throughout the message. Source ↗
- Open a formal message with "Sehr geehrte Frau [surname]," or "Sehr geehrter Herr [surname]," when you know the recipient's name, and "Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren," when you do not. The salutation ends with a comma, and the first word of the sentence that follows is written in lower case. Source ↗
- Close a formal message with "Mit freundlichen Grüßen" followed by your name — the standard business sign-off. The closing line itself takes no comma or other punctuation. Source ↗
